Joan Jordi Oliver
Joan Jordi Oliver (b. 1994) is a musician from Spain based in Zürich, Switzerland. As a saxophonist, composer, improviser, and producer of electronic music, his multifaceted artistic practice is based on constant exploration of new forms for musical expression that attempt to transcend aesthetic barriers and deny categorization.
His work as a saxophonist and performer-composer pushes to expand the possibilities of his instrument and focuses on the hybridization of the acoustic saxophone with the endless possibilities of transformation afforded by the electronic medium, a process in which the voice of the instrument is completely transfigured. As a producer, he has immersed himself in sonic research that explores a different notion of sound as space, reflecting on concepts borrowed from drone and ambient music aesthetics. His latest creative efforts in this direction have culminated in his first two albums of experimental ambient music, Enlaire (2021) and Transit (2022).
Joan works internationally as a freelance musician. An intense activity as a performer and numerous collaborations with artists, ensembles, orchestras and bands have brought him to many concert halls in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, the UK, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, Croatia, Israel, the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Thailand and Japan. He has performed in such renowned concert halls as Elbphilarmonie in Hamburg or Victoria Hall in Geneva in addition to legendary underground venues like ISSUE Project Room in New York or SuperDeluxe in Tokyo.
Besides his artistic practice and multiple collaborations, Joan works as a teacher for electroacoustic music at the Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich and curates his own concert series Strom am Mittag, a platform devoted to experimental electronic that involves both emerging and established artists from the Swiss music scene.
